Diva le Deviant is a Seattle emcee, performer, event planner, and business owner. At the beginning of every show she emcees, the Diva gives three rules that her audiences must obey. Her very first rule is, “You keep the Diva happy.” Today I’m going to tell you what I’ve learned from keeping the Diva happy.
At every show I've done with Diva, she asks the audience for champagne…and she always gets it. Inevitably, a waiter will deliver a glass to the stage, or a bottle to our dressing room. In all fairness, Diva usually phrases her desire less like a request, and more like an alluring suggestion. Diva exemplifies a woman who asks for what she wants, and knows she deserves it. That’s the kind of confidence it takes to host a show, and to lead an audience. |
Diva knows that her wants and desires are valid. The key here is that even if she doesn't get what she wants, she knows she deserves to ask for it. I have to say that one more time it is so good. Even if I don't end up getting what I want, I know I deserve to ask for it.
This is inspiring to me because so many women start negotiations with a compromise in mind. They won’t ask for what they actually want. Instead, they ask for what they think the other party will agree to. They want champagne, but they ask for a well drink, in the hopes of maybe getting a white wine. I’ve seen this pattern of behavior in everything from deciding between restaurants to negotiating salaries. This behavior often comes from a fear that we want too much, or that we don’t deserve what we want. This is a pervasive story in our culture. It is a fear that’s often debilitating for women. |
You cannot dream big dreams if you do not dare to want. You cannot
receive the joy you deserve if you are not willing to desire. You cannot step fully into your leadership without the
courage to ask for what you want. We can all take a cue from the Diva by stepping up to the microphone, and asking
for that champagne.
Imagine what it would be like to ask for anything you want, and to
receive it. Reflect on this in your journal.
Today, pay special attention to what you want. You don’t have to ask for what you want right away. Just notice what you want. Set a timer to go off every 30 minutes. When the timer sounds, pause and ask yourself, “What do I want right now?” What does my heart/body/spirit want? What kind of coffee do I want? What color lipstick do I want? You deserve to want it. You deserve to ask for it. You deserve to have it.
Then practice eliminating these phrases from your vocabulary for a day, and only saying "I want":
